1) The Aim of the Project
In this project we were proposed to design an audio amplifier. This amplifier should have an output power of 5 W and a gain of 100.
Our design is based on an IC called LM383. There are certain properties for the reason of using this chip. The following are some of the key properties and their brief explanations:
- High peak current capability:
Since we are dealing with a power amplifier, we€™ll deal with large currents so this is an important feature for us not to have a problem about the design.
- Large output voltage swing:
We€™ll have an output power of (at least) 5 W so the output voltage swing should be large and we should have low distortion.
- Wide supply voltage:
This IC has a supply voltage range betwwen 5V and 20 V. Output power can be adjusted by using different supply voltages.
- Few external parts needed:
The audio amplifier can be constructed with a few number of circuit elements to have the needed conditions.
- High input impedance:
This will prevent the amplifier from being affected by the impedance of the input source.
Also there are some other features that are important to prevent the IC from being destroyed.
- LM383 is AC short circuit protected
- LM383 has high voltage protection (it shuts down above 25V)
