Once you have received you I-20 or DS- 2019 form from the university SEVIS fee must be paid and received by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) prior to visa interview appointment.


NEW SEVIS RULE:

Beginning September 1, 2004, a new DHS rule goes into effect. This rule requires f-1 and J-1 visa applicants to pay one-time fee of US$100 to cover the costs of the Student Exchange and Visitor Information System (SEVIS). This fee is different from the visa application fee and is paid separately. NOTE: This fee does NOT apply to anyone already in the U.S. with F-1 or J-1 student status.

Students must pay the US$100 to DHS at least 3 business days before applying for a visa. This fee can only be paid by mail or via Internet. It can be paid by the student or a third party such as an agent. NOTE: A visa interview appointment cannot be scheduled until this fee is paid and received by DHS.

HOW TO PAY THE SEVIS FEE:

The SEVIS fee can ONLY be paid by one of the following methods:

1) INTERNET
*Go to www.fmjfee.com
* Complete form I-901, The '' Fee Remittance for certain F, J, M Nonimmigrants'' form.
* Include credit card payment ( US$100 ). Visa, Mastercard, American Express only.
* Enter student name exactly as it appears on the form I-20 ror Form DS-2019.
* Print copy of the online receipt for your records. Receipt is required to verify payment at embassy, consulate or port- of entry.
NOTE: Payment by Internet processed immediately. At time of payment, receipts can be printed directly from the computer.

2) MAIL
* Obtain form I-901. The forms are available at the web site.
* Complete the form.
*Include check, international money order, of foreign draft in the amount of US$100 made payable to '' The Department of Homeland Security''.
*Enter student name exactly as it appears on the form I-20 ror Form DS-2019.
* Mail the completed I-901 form and payment to the address listed on the Form I-901.
* A Form I-797 Receipt should be mailed to you within 3 days of processing the fee.
