Initial D: The Movie (2001) Description: Takumi, the breakthrough talented Toyota ’86 driver is nearing graduation. Dealing with his relationship problems with Mogi Natsuki, settling unfinished rivalries, questioning his dreams and an offer by Takahashi Ryosuke, Takumi drives us through the seasons in a stylish transition to his future after school in the 4th stage. Naturally, seeing as this movie is the third stage in the series and all, it’d serve as a recommendation for those curious, to see the 39 episodes that lead up to this. We are treated to flashbacks to remind us what Takumi’s been through but nothing really substantial and just some excuses to bombard us with neat racing music videoesque excerpts. Without a doubt, if you have seen the first two stages, little convincing is in order to see this follow-up. Although the series does get progressively worst, the way I phrase it is much harsher than how it actually is. Some of the magic from the beginning does seem to wear out, due to the impossibility of matching the earlier storyline, but these additions are perfect in their own ways providing us with consistent continuations of the character’s lives we’ve come to love. To pique interest for those who haven’t watched, it’s a wonder how the races seem to take a backseat (no pun intended, honest) to the character drama and that’s what personally makes the series so appealing. It’s exciting to watch the battles, that’s for sure, but solely because of the conflicts between the characters behind the wheel, and what fate the outcome holds for them. Meanwhile, Takumi’s conflicted “love life” adds to the amounting drama and serves as another example of how engaging the series is. Hints of comedy, drama, and romance all seep through and somehow fascinate with simple premises. It’s difficult to explain in detail, but it’s there. But there’s no need for the review to drag on though, just accept this as the start of a beautiful friendship with a fun series.
