Erik-Jan Zurcher - The Unionist Factor: The Role of the Committee of Union and Progress in the Turkish National Movement 1905-1926
The trials of 1926 aimed at the elimination of all rival groups within the Turkish nationalist movement which had at any time challenged the authority of Mustafa Kemal. The accusation used to achieve this aim was the following:
The former leaders of the Committee of Union and Progress, who had been ousted in 1918, had tried to regain power under their own name during the War of Independence and through political mantle organizations (the ‘Second Group’ and the Progressive Republican Party) after it. When these attempts failed they tried to gain their ends by an attempt at the life of the President.
My curiosity was aroused by the fact that the leadership of the Republic considered it worthwhile to wage such a campaign against the former leaders of the Committee. After all, the C.U.P. had lost all formal power in 1918, when it was disbanded. What made them so dangerous even after eight years?
