This work presents the results of archaeological excavations, carried out initially during 1983 - 1989 at the location of the late Medieval Alian(Alevi) monastery, built in XVI cent.

This research comprises three parts. The first part contains the characterisation of the archaeological site. The natural environment and the circumstances are described, which serve as prerequisites for the emergence of the ancient cult site and the establishment of a Thracian shrine. A brief survey of the historical scene is made, which influenced favourably the development of a significant local religious centre in the heart of the Thracian hinterland of Hellenistic Odessus. The history of the investigations on the past of the region, in the centre of which the late medieval monument is situated, is discussed. These investigations parallel the emergence of new Bulgarian science at the turn of the century and with certain interruptions continue for almost a century. The newest and currently latest stage of the investigations of the site comprise the organising and conduct of systematic archaeological excavations and research. In the course of the excavations the topographic structure of the ancient site emerged and the topographic succession between it and the late Medieval monument was established. It turned out, that the Thracian cultural stratum is not uniform, but comprises three layers of varying thickness, stacked during different phases of the life of this site in ancient times, delimited by natural precipitation with strongly disrupted stratigraphy. It was established that the construction remains and other immovable finds contained in these layers group into three archaeological complexes, not linked directly with each other, differentiated by time and type as three different forms of a Thracian shrine, taking consecutive space in this natural cult site.
