In 1950s
Establishment of Modern Muslim Community in Korea
Modern Muslim community appeared in 1955 by a group of Turkish Muslim soldiers who had participated in the Korean War(1950~1953) under the banner of the United Nations. The Turkish soldiers, besides their duties to defend peace and freedom, propagated their religion by which the first Korean Muslims opened a new era for Islam in Korea

Among these Turkish soldiers, Abdulgafur Karaismailoglu who was an Imam of the Turkish brigade, started Islamic teaching to those Koreans only who visited the Turkish army camp at first and then to Korean general publics through public lecture. As a result of his efforts, some Koreans gathered around him with keen
interest in Islam.

1955 Islam was spread by Abdul-Gaur Karaismailoglu, the Imam of Turkish brigade, which had participated in the Korean War.
1955.09 “Korea Islamic Society” was organized by early Korean Muslims headed by Umar Kim Jin-Kyu.
1955.10 A praying room was opened at the military tents supported by Turkish army.
1956.04 “Chung-Jin Madrasa” was established at the military tents in order to give secondary education and Islamic teaching to poor children.
1956.07 Abdul Gafur Karaismailoglu was replaced by a young Imam, Zubeyr Koch. Temporary Masjid with a minaret was built at a big military tent.
1958.04 H.E. Menderes, the Prime Minister of Turkey, visited the temporary Masjid.
1959.11 Umar Kim Jin-Kyu, accompanied by Sabri Suh Jung-Kil, traveled around Islamic countries in order to inform of difficulties of Islam in Korea and ask for assistance. During their stay in Saudi Arabia, they performed the Hajj, for the first time among Koreans.
1961.09 Delegation of Malaysian Senate headed by Ubaydullah visited the Korea Islamic Society for investigating the Muslim situation in Korea.
1962.03 11 Korean Muslim students including 3 women were sent for the Islamic education in Klang Islamic College of Malaysia for 6 months.
1962.11 H.E. Abdul Razzaq, the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia visited Korean Muslims.
1963.10 H.E. Haji Noah, the Speaker of Malaysian Parliament visited Korean Muslims.
1963.11 H.E. Tunku Abdul Rahman, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, donated M$ 33,000-for building Masjid in Masjid in Seoul.
1964.10 The Korea Islamic Society initiated to build a Masjid in Seoul, but failed due to shortage of budget.
1965.04 United small organizations and organized the Korea Muslim Federation.(President-Sabri Suh Jung-Kil, Secretary General-Sulaiman Lee Hwa-Shik)
1966.04 Established a temporary Masjid and office at Wonhyoro of Seoul.
1966.10 Maulana Sayyid Jamil, the president of Quran Society of Pakistan visited Korea and initiated whole-hearted Da’Wah for 40 days. (From then he visited Korea 6 times more and brought up Korean Muslim leaders)
1967.01 Sabri Suh, the president of KMF, accompanied by Osman Kim Yong-Sun, traveled around Islamic countries for 7 months. They informed of the situation of Islam in Korea and appealed assistances for the construction of Masjid.
1967.03 The Ministry of Awqaf of Kuwait donated $ 14,000 for building a Masjid.
1967.03 The Korea Muslim Federation was registered to the Korea Government and obtained the official religious status.
1967.06 Published “The Korea Islam Herald”, a bi-monthly and bi-lingual newspaper.
1967.10 The temporary Masjid and office were transferred to Namyoung-dong of Seoul.
1970.09 Korea Government donated the site of 5,000㎡ for Masjid and Islamic Center
1970.10 Transfer of the temporary Masjid to Hannam-dong of Seoul, where Seoul Central Masjid is situated now.
1971.09 6 representatives from Korea Muslim Federation were received in audience by H.M. King Faisal of Saudi Arabia, who had been in official visit to Japan, and appealed to him for assistance of Masjid construction.
1973.03 Sabri Suh and Abdul Aziz Kim Il-Jo, the Secretary General of KMF, traveled around Islamic countries for fund-raising of Masjid construction.
1973.12 Organized Hajj delegation headed by Imam Muhammad Yoon Doo-Young and after Hajj traveled around Islamic countries for fund-raising of Masjid construction.
1974.06 The Islamic Call Society of Libya dispatched Br. Siddiqi and Br. Mohib al-Haq as Da’wah workers.
1974.10 With the help of some sincere foreign Muslims including Dato al-Sagof Consul General of Saudi Arabia to Singapore, the groundbreaking ceremony of Seoul Central Masjid and Islamic Center was held.
1976.05 The opening ceremony of Seoul Central Masjid and Islamic Center was held with the participation of more than 50 Muslim leaders from 17 Islamic countries Together with this ceremony, the seminar on the Da’wah Islamiyah in Muslim Minority Countries was held.
1976.06 Opened “The Institute of Arabic Language” at the Islamic Center
1976.06 Muhammad Ali, the famous world-boxing champion, visited Central Masjid.
1976.07 17 kinds of Islamic literature were translated into Korean Language and distributed free of charge, starting from “How to become a Muslim”.
1976.08 Imam and Quran reciter from Qatar came to Korea for Tarawi Prayer during the month of Ramadan.
1976.12 About three hundred Muslims gathered in Busan, the 2nd great city in Korea and established a temporary Masjid.
1977.05 Sheikh Abdullah Ali al-Mutawa of Kuwait visited Korean and proposed to establish the Islamic college.
1977.05 Dar al-Ifta’ of Saudi Arabia dispatched Sheikh Sayyid Marakar from India as a Da’wah worker.
1977.09 Under KMF, organized Korea Muslim students’ Association(KMSA) with 100 University students.
1977.10 Opened “Sunday Madrasah” at the Islamic Center for teaching Islam to Muslim children.
1977.11 Opened “Taekwondo Hall” at the Islamic Center for training Muslim’s body and mind.
1978.03 With the help of Sheikh Omar Abdullah Kamel, established Jeddah branch and Islamic Center for teaching Islam to Korean workers who were working in Saudi Arabia.
1978.04 Yusuf Yoon Hyung-Ku, Director General and Muhammad Kim Mu-Chang, Secretary General of KMF visited Saudi Arabia for fund-raising of Islamic College.
1978.11 132 Hajj delegation headed by Yusuf Yoon performed Hajj.
1978.12 Established Kwang-ju branch and temporary Masjid for Da’wah Islamiyah in rural area.
1979.03 Established Kuwait branch in Zaharah Camp of Samho Construction Co. for Da’wah Islamiyah to Korean worker there.
1979.03 Held “1st Islamic Culture Exhibition” by KMSA at the downtown of Seoul.
1979.03 Umar Kim Jin-Kyu, one of early Korean Muslims, passed away. The funeral of Islamic way was conducted for the first time in Korea.
1979.07 H.R.H. Prince Naif, the Interior Minister of Saudi Arabia visited Korea and donated $ 30,000-for Islamic College Project.
1979.07 Sulaiman Lee Haeng-Lae was dispatched to Kuwait branch of KMF.
1979.09 Held the groundbreaking ceremony of Busan Masjid with the financial support of Ali Fellaq, the former Minister of Finance of Libya.
1979.10 104 Hajj delegations headed by Sulaiman Lee Hwa-Shik, the Director General of KMF performed Hajj. Appealed to special concern on Korean situation to supply crude oil.

1985.02 Muhammad Yoon, the Imam of Seoul Central Masjid, passed away and Islamic funeral was conducted.

1991.08 H.E. Abdullah Nasif, the Secretary General of Rabita, visited Seoul Central Masjid.
1991.11 Started “one-night Meeting” for training Muslim leaders every 1st and 3rd Saturday evening, with the support of Dr Ahmad Totonji of IIFSO.
1992.01 Started “Halqah Meeting” every 2th 4th Saturday for teaching Quran and Islam under auspices of the Committee on Da’wah Islamiyah of KMF
1993.06 Held the opening ceremony of Madrasa at the enlarged story of Islamic Center of Seoul Central Masjid.
1994.06 Held the Seminar on “Islam, Korea and the World” at the Conference Hall of Seoul Central Masjid, on the 18 anniversary pf opening of Seoul Central Masjid.
1995.04 Two calligraphers from Indonesia decorated the walls of Seoul Central Masjid with the verses of Holy Quran, with the financial support of Indonesia community in Korea.
1995.11 Held the annual seminar on “Islam and Peace” at the Conference Hall of Seoul Central Masjid.

1998.04 Organized the Advisory Committee, composed of ambassadors from Islamic Countries to Korea in order to assist Da’wah activities of Korea Muslim Federation.
1998.07 H.E. Abdul Halim Ismail, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, visited Seoul Central Masjid.
1998.08 Held again the 7th WAMY Local Muslim Youth Camp, which has interrupted since 1989. This WAMY Camp is being held every summer with the help of World Assembly of Muslim Youth(WAMY) until now.
1998.10 H.R.H. Abdullah Ibn Abdul Aziz al-saud, Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia met Korean Muslim representatives during his visit in Korea and donated 5 hundred thousand dollars for repairing and beautifying Masjids in Korea.
1998.12 Korea Institute of Islamic Culture(KIIC) opened. “Saturday Islamic Culture” on the first Saturday of every month, with the financial support of Iqraa Charitable Society.
2000.03 41 Hajj delegation headed by Imam Sulaiman Lee Haeng-Lae performed Hajj invited by King Fahd of Saudi Arabia.
2000.11 H.R.H. Prince Sultan Ibn Abdul Aziz, Minister of Defense and Aviation of Saudi Arabia, visited Seoul Central Masjid and donated 3 hundred thousand dollars for establishing Madrasa.
2001.03 H.R.H. Prince Salman Ibn Abdul Aziz, Governor of Riyadh of Saudi Arabia, visited Seoul Central Masjid.
2001.09 Representative of China Islamic Association visited KMF according to mutual visit.
